A United Airlines Boeing 777-200, registration N223UA performing flight UA-940 from Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany) with 241 passengers, was enroute at FL350 about 20nm north of Kingston,ON (Canada) and about 130nm eastnortheast of Toronto,ON when the crew reported problems with their radios and decided to divert to Toronto. The airplane turned left onto a westerly heading, when the airplane began to squawk loss of communication. Toronto Approach pulled other aircraft from the approach to runway 23 explaining runway 23 will be closed and redirected those aircraft onto one of the runways 24. The United crew continued for a safe landing in Toronto about 55 minutes after the onset of trouble, the aircraft was not heard on both approach and tower with the approach controller verifying the position of the United triple 7 via other flight crews establishing visual contact with the B772.

The FAA reported after contact with the company, that the pilot in command had spilled coffee over the radio equipment which interfered with the communication equipment. He inadvertently sent the unlawful interference code, then changed to loss of communication code.
