A Lufthansa Boeing 747-400, registration D-ABVE performing flight LH-511 from Buenos Aires,BA (Argentina) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was enroute overhead the Atlantic quite some distance south of the great circle track (the airplane overflew Rio de Janeiro and after the diversion Algeria and Palma Mallorca), when a male passenger (32) became seriously sick and showed no signs of life. The crew diverted to Recife,PE (Brazil), where the airplane landed safely around 3:30am local (06:30Z). The passenger had to be pronounced dead upon arrival.
The airplane is about to reach Frankfurt with a delay of 6.5 hours.
Recife's police reported, that 104 capsules (more than 1.6kg) of cocaine were found in the stomach of the man, one of the capsules had ruptured. Further analysis is scheduled to check whether the passenger died of an overdose of cocaine.
