This beta fixes the problem decoding number formats in different cultures. The problem searching for available cycle data across day boundaries has been corrected, and the LWE no longer automatically disables the GRIB mode when the download fails. I have also changed the temperature interpolation.
The LWE is still just using the Tropopause data to guess at everything below and above. I am now looking for other forecast data that can be used, then I will announce what I see as the available options for general discussion (mostly relating to the setting of wind direction targets).

ZitatCurrent Development Plan ...
What I am thinking of doing in the next beta is downloading all forecast data for the relevent upper altitude levels and then extrapolating the data to give very accurate ambient air temperature and wind speed targets at each of the upper FL targets injected into FSX. I will then calculate a best fit linear equation with a positive slope (most important for FSX) to set the wind direction in an FSX friendly manner (that is always veering upwards).
For now, the current beta just uses the tropopause data and a bit of guess work. The accuracy at different FLs will come in the next beta, that is provided you take into account the imposed limitations of the predicted wind directions.
I hope this meets with everyone's approval. In the meantime, you can give some thought to what flight planning assistance you would like to see, or feel necessary. Only thoughts at the moment, I will probably open another sticky topic for that discussion soon.

Okay.

ZitatNew Development Plans ...
Thanks everyone for your assistance, I have had the following ideas for the next phases of development regarding the GRIB forecast data, and have also decided to complete the full automation of the wind stabilisation.
GRIB Phase Two Development ...
Background processing
All the GRIB download, data extraction and decoding will be done in the background so as to have no impact on the general operation and performance of OpusFSX and the simulator. The software will be ready for release at this point.
Historic Data
This option will be accomodated and the appropriate forecast cycle data downloaded and prepared. Initially this will be for the previous 24 hour period in keeping with the current historic weather option. The implementation of the historic option may proceed as part of the next phase, I am not sure at this moment.
GRIB Phase Three Development ...
Full Altitude Coverage
The main aim of this development cycle will be to provide greater (full) altitude coverage, providing detailed forecast data for every altitude range, classified as Low, Medium, and High altitude ranges. These ranges will cover every level from 6,000 feet right up to 60,000 feet.
The LWE will adjust your altitude targets automatically as you climb or descend, always giving FSX very tight targets to adhere to, or at least try. These weather injections will not require new METAR data to be downloaded, that will still be controlled by the settings in the Weather dialog.
Seperate Low, Medium, and High Altitude Weather Reports will be provided allowing you to monitor the progress of the download, data extraction, data decoding and of course see the resulting forecasted data for the altitude ranges (flight levels).
Hopefully these tight wind and temp targets at all levels (the same as we currently do between FL200 and FL440) will help reduce the chance of wind shifts to an absolute minimum !
These changes will also speed up the GRIB data download and data preperation process since this process will be done in phases. For instance, when you are on the ground, the surface weather can be loaded immediately without waiting for the GRIB forecast. As soon as the Low Level forecast data is ready the weather will be automatically re-injected (no need to download the METARs again) with the low level wind and temp targets. The LWE will then proceed to download and prepare the remaining medium level, and then high level data. Remember the GRIB forecasts data is valid for 6 hours so this processwill usually be a one off, and like now, will only be repeated when the forecast data is out of date.
Automated Wind Stabilisation ...
This option will be enabled by default but will only come into effect when you climb above the Recovery Altitude (RA) + 500 feet. Above that altitude all the usual wind stabilisation and recovery procedures will be activated. The RA is adjustable along with the current parameters, that wont change, just the added automation. After discussions with Nick, this will allow all low level VFR flyers to leave this option enabled knowing full well that should they venture into higher levels the LWE will take care of them.
Onward and upward as the saying goes ...

This is a pre-release beta version. All GRIB data decoding has now been offloaded into a separate program (FSDECODER.EXE) to prevent any delays to the normal Live View and Live Camera operation of OpusFSX.

This
is the initial release of OpusFSX with true upper wind and temperature
forecast data. The FSDECODER program is no longer invoked when the GRIB,
CSV, and DAT files are deemed to be still valid. The DHM vibration
effects for light aircraft are now initiated at 40% throttle setting.
Finally, the Spy window will now remain open for up to 5 minutes.Regards

In this beta the Upper wind and temperature targets have been improved. New program icon choices have been included within the installation files. Any precipitation between two closely spaced cloud layers is now associated with the cloud layer having the greatest cloud cover. We have improved the general cloud appearance. Finally, the wind stabilisation is now enabled automatically if the user climbs above the Recovery Altitude + 500 feet.
For GRIB users, this is the first of our 'Big Brother' betas in which the LWE tries to monitor your flight and minimise any chance of violent wind shifts. In this beta the monitoring is restricted to altitudes above FL200 and continues up to FL440. Future upgrades may introduce further monitoring of FSX to make sure it is conforming with what the LWE has specified.
Please only report any minor and major wind shifts (minor fluctuations are to be expected) above FL200, and if possible let me know what the Upper Atmosphere wind targets were within the report window.
Please for now select the defaults with GRIB enabled, Wind Stabilisation enabled or disabled depending on the likelyhood of your system experiencing wind shifts whilst climbing up to FL195 etc.

This
beta greatly improves the GRIB SAT temperature control within the
flight simulator, extends the improvements to the upper wind control for
simulated (non-GRIB) winds, and corrects a slight problem with the
automated wind stabilisation control.
